It hit me recently that CD towers are a sign of the past. Once a staple in everyone's interior, now just makes your living room look strangely out of touch and frumpy dump. As much as I hate to admit it, CDs are dead. And as a result the way we approach new music has changed as well. I can be given 10 new albums via MP3s and not bat an eye, whereas 10 newly purchased CDs meant I was either 1. having a crazy spending spree or 2. its my birthday.
Things have way less meaning these days. Everything is so disposable and temporary. So heres to some of my old CDs that were thoroughly appreciated back in the day and made an real impact in my life.
When I think of high school I think of everything K Records and Kill Rock Stars. Calvin Johnson, Ian Svenonius, Satisfact, Heavenly, Joanne...who was always three steps ahead and too.cool.for.school. And still is.
When I was home sick in the dorms in NY I listened to Slint nonstop. Which lead to all things Rodan, Shipping News, June of '44, Shellac, and thus sealed my fate as a fan of math rock.
I saw the Make Up all by myself at the Knitting Factory as a freshman at SVA. I believe I wore high waters, mary janes and a very emo messenger bag slung around my shoulders.
Modest Mouse reminds me of hanging out with the Spragues and all the kittens at their house. (girl bait, if there ever was one.)
Fugazi used to have $5 shows that were all ages, and two drumsets on stage that was mind blowing at the time for me.
I lived and breathed for Unwound shows and was secretly pleased when Justin Trosper came out yet again with his clear guitar. Which yes, I thought was hot.
My Bloody Valentine reminds me of Danna and how our friend Ricky accidently ran over her Loveless CD and cracked the case.
Blur reminds me of Jane and her thick black glasses and her love for Jarvis Cocker and Suede, all things Brit pop back in high school.
Broadcast reminds me of dating AJ and being really creative and thinking we were going to rule the world with our designs.
Blonde Redhead takes me back to the insanely rainy winter we had back in 2005 and all I did was go to random house parties on the weekends and meeting alot of new friends.
Nostalgia is dangerous.
