I've been pretty fascinated by the idea of synesthesia ever since I'd first heard about it in an experimental typography class. I think my interest in the topic was largely due to the fact that it describes something I'd experienced from time to time but didn't know it actually had a name.
Anyway I was really excited to discover that one of my co workers has the more rare version of synesthesia. We were just talking color and it hit me that everything he was saying about color was pointing to him having really strong synesthesia capabilities.
He was telling me about how everyone is color, and how it can occasionally fluctuate on a daily basis.
Then when I asked him to elaborate, he showed me his fav contacts list, it blew my mind. Its exactly what this stuff is all about. Notice how his favorite contacts aren't listed by name, rather they're listed as their respective colors. Can you imagine dialing red and knowing thats your boyfriend, and knowing that when green calls its your mom?
Seriously, the highlight of my week right there. And no, he had no idea there was this phenomenon called synestesia which makes it even more authentic and mind blowing.
dude i have the one where i associate personalities with numbers. it's faded as i've gotten older but when i used to have to study math the numbers 1-10 were different, distinct characters in my mind that i knew really well. they even have genders. 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10 were boys and 2, 4, 6, 9 were girls.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of this synestesia! But how very interesting. I wonder what color I'd be. And I remember Maurene counting people's words on her fingertips. I myself do the dishes in multiples of 10 and dry them in multiples of 7 so multiples of 3 are left to dry.
ReplyDeleteThe phone contacts list...WOW. I'd want to be "duck's egg" or minty green but I might have too frenetic and loud of an energy for that. Anything but YELLOW please!
